飛騨地方の家具メーカーの見本市のためのメインブース。
飛騨木工連合会が主催する見本市は、2013年より毎年秋に開催されていたが、コロナ禍で休止していたため、3年ぶりの開催となった。再始動1年目は、同会が定める飛騨デザイン憲章の第1条に立ち返り「自然との共生」をテーマに開催された。その憲章を具現化した空間の構成が求められた。
郷土資料に掲載されていた飛騨地方の木こり達の力強さと、現代の家具工場に積まれた家具用材のイメージから、山の小径を歩くような空間が想起された。
家具は、森から伐採された原木を主材としており、製材された板が家具になるプロセスを可視化し、展示することで来訪者が家具の経緯を感じることができる場を目指している。
使用した400本の2mのスギ材は、緑色のPPバンドで仮留めされており、加工を最小限とすることで、閉会後に再生利用可能な状態で返却するといった循環を意識して計画した。仮留めにした結果、腰かけた際に、合掌造りの駒尻のように動きを許容する柔らかな感覚になることは偶然の発見だった。
2mのスギ材の一部は、1回のカットで800mmと1200mmになるようにすることで、工数を簡略し、2mの材と合わせて、3種類の長さの木材で全体を構成した。丘に一端が隠れることにより、未加工の板材をそのまま使用できる、余白のある計画としている。
テーブルは、各家具メーカーの工場の端材を集めて再利用した天板や飛騨地方で製材された挽板を使用している。テーブルの脚は、実際の商品である脚を2種拝借し、取り付けた。テーブルに各社の寄せ集めた材を活用することで、利用する人が愛着を持つように意図している。
このブースは、トークイベントの会場、カフェ、また家具の部品の展示場を兼ねており、入り口から奥へと歩くと、家具が完成していく様子が見られる。丘の頂上には、各社の一押しの椅子を展示し、実際に使用されている家具用材を展示された台の近くに配置し、家具用材から展示物へと加工される過程に触れることができる。
植栽は、実際に飛騨地方で育った木々であるトネリコ、西洋シャクナゲ、藤、柳、ウメモドキを選定した。積まれた板に座る、展示物を見る、トークイベントを楽しむ、植栽を楽しむといった自然を感じる多様な空間を目指した。
The main booth design for a furniture makers’ trade fair in the Hida region.
The trade fair, organized by the Hida Woodworkers' Association, was held every fall since 2013. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year was the first relaunch after three years of suspension. The fair’s theme "Symbiosis with Nature," was a reference to Article 1 of the Hida Design Charter set forth by the association. The space was required to embody this charter.
Local documentation of hardy lumberjacks of the Hida region, and the furniture lumber piled up in a modern furniture factory, inspired us to create a space that resembles a walk along a small path in the mountains.
The furniture is made mainly from logs harvested from the forest. By visualizing and displaying the process of turning sawn boards into furniture, the aim was to create a place where visitors could feel the history of furniture.
The 400 2-meter-long cedar logs were fastened with green PP bands to minimize processing and to enable recycling after the exhibition ended. It was a fortuitous discovery that the temporary fastening would result in a soft sensation when the visitors sat on it, allowing for movement like the butt of a Gassho-zukuri piece.
A portion of the 2-meter cedar lumber was split into 800 mm and 1,200 mm lengths to simplify the man-hours required. Together with the 2-meter lumber, the entire structure was made up of three different lengths of lumber. One end is concealed by a hill, allowing for the use of unprocessed planks as they are, a plan with open ends.
The tabletops are made from scrap wood collected and reused from the factories of furniture makers, as well as sawn wood from the Hida region. For the table legs, we borrowed two types of legs from actual products and attached them to the table. By utilizing the mishmash of lumber from each company for the tables, the intent was to create a sense of attachment among those who use the products.
The booth doubled as a talk event venue, a café, and a display area for furniture components. As visitors walked from the entrance to the back of the booth, they could see the furniture being built. At the top of the hill, each company's most popular chairs were on display, and actual furniture lumber was placed near the display stand, allowing visitors to experience the process of processing the furniture lumber into the exhibits.
The trees selected for planting are ash, rhododendron, wisteria, willow, and Japanese knotweed, all of which grow in the Hida region. The goal was to create a diverse space where visitors can experience nature by sitting on stacked boards, viewing exhibits, enjoying talk events, and enjoying the plantings.
